An Act to Incorporate the North Carolina Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb.

Whereas certain individuals in this State have associated themselves together, under the name of the North Carolina Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb, for the purpose of establishing an asylum for the reception and instruction of such unfortunate persons in this State as may belong to that description; and they being desirous that this Legislature should extend to them the powers and privileges of a body corporate and politic: therefore,

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the present and future members of the North Carolina Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb, be, and they are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate, by the name and style of "The North Carolina Institution for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb;" and by that name shall have perpetual succession and a common seal; may acquire, hold and possess, sell and transfer estate, real and personal; may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, answer and be answered, and generally do, exercise and perform all the powers and privileges usually exercised and performed by bodies politic and corporate in this State.

II. Be it further enacted, That power is hereby granted to the members of the Institution aforesaid to make and establish such bye-laws and regulations for their government, and that of their officers and agents, as they may deem necessary and proper, the same being not inconsitent with the constitution and laws of this State, or of the United States.

Read three times and ratified in General Assembly,
this 7th day of Jan. 1828.
