The American Revolution in North Carolina

Anthony Bledsoe

Major in a VA unit - 1776
Major in the Washington County Regiment of Militia - 1777-1779
Major in the Sullivan County Regiment of Militia - 1779-1781
Lt. Colonel in the Sullivan County Regiment of Militia - 1781-1783
Colonel over the Davidson County Regiment of Militia - 1783

Very early in the Revolutionary War, Anthony Bledsoe was a Major in the Virginia Militia. Since the NC/VA border was not surveyed until 1779, many men who considered themselves to be Virginians were actually living in North Carolina. Few even admitted it after the state line was surveyed.

Later pensioners claimed they served under Maj. Anthony Bledsoe in Washington County, North Carolina as early as 1777. However, most official historians claim that Anthony Bledsoe continued to be a Virginia Militia officer well into 1779.

On 10/30/1779, Anthony Bledsoe was commissioned a Major under Col. Isaac Shelby in the newly-created Sullivan County Regiment, which was created out of part of Washington County. (so, it is very likely that Bledsoe had actually been serving as a Major in Washington County, NC like the early pensioners claimed).

During the 1Q of 1781, Anthony Bledsoe was commissioned a Lt. Colonel under Col. Isaac Shelby in the Sullivan County Regiment of Militia. Lt. Col. Anthony Bledsoe was with his regiment at the battle of Moncks Corner #4, SC on October 16, 1781.

On 5/26/1783, Anthony Bledsoe was commissioned as Colonel/Commandant over the newly-created Davidson County Regiment of Militia, a position he held until the end of the war.
