On 9/9/1775, Anthony Ward was commissioned a Major under Col. William Purviance in the New Hanover County Regiment of Militia.

On 4/22/1776, Anthony Ward was commissioned a Lt. Colonel under Col. William Purviance in the New Hanover County Regiment of Militia.

In early 1777, Anthony Ward was commissioned Colonel/Commandant over the New Hanover County Regiment of Militia, a position he held until around October of 1779, when he died after a lengthy illness.
