Lt. Colonel in the Tryon County Regiment of Militia - 1775-1776
Major in the 4th NC Regiment - 1776-1777
Colonel in the Lincoln County Regiment of Militia - 1779-1783

On 9/9/1775, Charles McLean was commissioned as a Lt. Colonel under Col. William Graham in the Tryon County Regiment of Militia.

On 4/16/1776, Charles McLean was commissioned as a Major in the 4th NC Regiment on the Continental Line. He resigned in March or April of 1777 to take his seat in the North Carolina Senate.

On 2/8/1779, the NC General Assembly created Lincoln County and soon thereafter Charles McLean was commissioned as a Colonel along with Col. William Graham in the Lincoln County Regiment of Militia, a position he held until the end of the war (assumed, records incomplete).
