The American Revolution in North Carolina

Michael Rogers

Captain in the Wake County Regiment of Militia - 1776-1777
Lt. Colonel in the Wake County Regiment of Militia - 1777-1778
Colonel in the Wake County Regiment of Militia - 1778-1783

Michael Rogers is known to have been a Captain in the Wake County Regiment of Militia under Col. John Hinton, Sr. at the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge on February 27, 1776. It is most likely that he was appointed a Captain as early as September of 1775, but this Author has found no definitive proof thereof.

It is entirely possible that Michael Rogers was promoted to Major sometime during 1776, but this Author has not been able to prove this one way or the other.

In early 1777, Michael Rogers is appointed a Lt. Colonel under Col. John Hinton, Sr. in the Wake County Regiment of Militia, replacing Lt. Col. Theophilus Hunter, who had resigned.

On April 30, 1778, the NC General Assembly appointed Michael Rogers as a Colonel in the Wake County Regiment of Militia, alongside Col. John Hinton, Sr., who resigned a few months later. It is most probable that Col. Michael Rogers became the Commandant over the Wake County Regiment of Militia upon the resignation of Col. John Hinton, Sr. This is unclear due to the fact that upon the latter's resignation, his son, John Hinton, Jr. was also appointed as Colonel in the Wake County Regiment of Militia. Available records indicate that Col. Michael Rogers continued in this position until the end of the war.

Michael Rogers was elected to the Fifth Provincial Congress of November 1776 in Halifax. He was also elected to the NC Senate from 1778 to 1781. Prior to these, Michael Rogers was elected as the first Sheriff of Wake County in 1771.

Michael Rogers was born c.1739, the son of Joseph and Mary Rogers, and he died in June of 1797 in Wake County, NC. His wife's name was Cecilia, and they had one known son - Allen.
