Lt. Colonel in the Currituck County Regiment of Militia - 1776-1777
Colonel in the Currituck County Regiment of Militia - 1777-1779

In early 1776, Solomon Perkins is a known Captain under Col. Samuel Jarvis in the Currituck County Regiment of Militia, and he was assigned to to guard Cape Hatteras for two months that year. It is likely that he was a Captain as early as 1775, but this Author has found no definitive evidence thereof.

On April 22, 1776, the NC Provincial Congress appointed Solomon Perkins as a Lt. Colonel under Col. Hollowell Williams in the Currituck County Regiment of Militia.

In the 1Q of 1777, the NC General Assembly appointed Solomon Perkins as second Colonel, alongside Col. Samuel Jarvis, in the Currituck County Regiment of Militia, replacing Col. Hollowell Williams, who had resigned his commission. Col. Solomon Perkins led the Currituck County Regiment of Militia in the Purrysburg, SC expedition of late 1778/early 1779, and he led this regiment at the battle of Briar Creek, GA on March 3, 1779.

Solomon Perkins was born c.1746, the son of Henry Perkins and Abigail Brent, in Currituck County, NC. Solomon Perkins was a delegate to the First Provincial Congress in August of 1774 in New Bern; the Third Provincial Congress of August 1775 in Hillsborough; and the Fourth Provincial Congress of April 1776 in Halifax. He represented Currituck County in the NC Senate during 1778 and 1779.

Several sources hint that Col. Solomon Perkins died in 1779, perhaps as a result of injuries received at the battle of Briar Creek, GA, or perhaps some illness. This Author has not found any decent biographies of this man and has not found any mentions of him after 1779.

If anyone has a decent biography of this man, please send to this Author via e-mail or snail mail, and it will be added here, with full credit given.
