On December 21st, the North Carolina
Provincial Council authorized a split of the Salisbury District
Minutemen into two separate and distinct regiments, one led by
Col. Griffith Rutherford and one led by Col. Thomas Polk. Col.
Matthew Locke took over the 1st Rowan County Regiment of Militia,
replacing Col. Griffith Rutherford. It is currently unknown who
took over the Mecklenburg County Regiment of Militia at this
point in time. It is entirely possible that Col. Thomas Polk
retained leadership over both regiments.
On December 22nd, the North Carolina
Provincial Council authorized the creation of a second regiment
of Militia within Pasquotank County, with Col. Isaac Gregory
as its leader. There are now 43 regiments (aka battalions) of
Minutemen/Militia across the province.
