Requested by citizens back in August, by December of 1776, the North Carolina civil authorities agreed to establish the new Washington District west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Since the area had not been officially surveyed, most locals called the populated area the "Squabble State" since many thought they were Virginia citizens and continued to recognize Virginia authority. The new Washington District Regiment of Militia was authorized on December 23rd. |
