Per AirNav - activated 5/1961. Davidson County Airport was founded by Joe Dillard as a grass strip of 1,000 feet in 1958. In 1967, the City of Lexington became the sponsoring agency and in 1993 Davidson County became the sponsoring agency. In 1998, the airport expanded to a 5,000 foot runway with a parallel taxiway and ramp. The total project cost was $14 million and it was completed in 2000. Today the airport has expanded to include fifty (50) T-hangars, six corporate hangars, and two private corporate hangars. Owned by the Davidson County Airport Authority. The July 1960 Charlotte Sectional Chart depicted Midway Airport as having a 2,600' unpaved runway. 1965 aerial photo showed Midway Airport had an asphalt Runway 2/20, with a parallel taxiway on the west side, and six rows of hangars and six light aircraft visible parked outside. Midway Airport was evidently closed by 1990, as it was no longer depicted on the August 1990 Charlotte Sectional Chart. The site of Midway Airport was located southwest of the intersection of Interstate 85 and Old Thomasville Road. |
