||This is an airstrip in the NC mountains west
of Blowing Rock, NC. The strip was cut by William S. Whiting
in the late 1950s before he was killed in an aircraft accident
landing at Lenoir, NC with his friend Warren Rowland. This was
about 1959. Both men were from Camden, SC. It is on U.S. Hwy.
221 about 2/3rds of the way from Blowing Rock to Grandfather
Mountain. The site is in the "SweetGrass" development
of luxury retirement homes. There is a chimney still standing
in a patch of grass on the hillside looking down over the lake.
The paved road continues to the airstrip. It is hard to see in
the satellite view but when you walk the site it is easily identified.
