Originally owned and built by the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad.
This line was abandoned, not sure when. Assume the 1970s after Seaboard Air Line Railway merged with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1967.
Ashpole became a stop on the Southeastern Railroad line in 1898 and the town's first lots were sold. Ashpole was renamed to Fairmont in 1907. 
The 1899 Legislative Act (Chapter 55, dated February 15, 1899) asserts that this railroad was chartered via the Secretary of State's office on August 4, 1897.
