1988 - RailAmerica (holding company) acquired the line from Norfolk Southern. The Virginia Southern Railroad is a Class III short line railroad that started in November of 1988. The line runs from Burkeville, VA to Oxford, NC, which is about 75 miles. The portion of the line between Clarksville, VA and Oxford, NC has not been in use for more than a decade and is overgrown with trees. The railroad is headquartered Keysville, VA and they interchange with Norfolk Southern Railway at Burkeville. The Virginia Southern Railroad is operated by the North Carolina & Virginia Railroad and is owned by RailAmerica. |
