The Washington & Vandemere Railroad was a joint venture of the E. M. Short Lumber Company and the Eureka Lumber Company, 1904-1908.

On May 1, 1927 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad leased the Washington & Vandemere Railroad, extending the old Wilmington & Weldon Railroad branch to Washington southeast to Vandemere, NC.
