Patriot Col. Edward Barnwell with a detachment of his Beaufort
District Regiment of Militia was sent to prevent the British
from seizing rice from plantations along the lower Savannah River.
He was surprised by Major Andrew Deveaux (Beaufort Loyalist Militia)
and lost six (6) men killed and five (5) men captured.
