* Note there were two Captains of NC Militia named Joseph Martin. It is entirely possible that they were the same man, but with different sources it is difficult to ascertain with any certainty. This man was from Washington County. He was first in the VA Militia, and in 1779, he became a Lt. Colonel. The other Capt. Joseph Martin was from Surry County.
